Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses -- one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and the other in Manhattan.The Upper School, located in the Bronx, is comprised of approximately 600 students and 80 faculty members.

Position Summary
ECFS seeks to hire a Film teacher for Grades 8-12. The candidate will implement a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate for the range of ages, skills, and experience levels for middle school through high school students. The candidate should have a passion for filmmaking and working with young students in a school with a diverse student body in a values-based community. The candidate should demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within and outside of the classroom.

The hiring range for this position is $68,212-$161,914 (subject to union negotiations).

Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities of the Film Teacher will include the following:

  • Teaching approximately ⅔ teaching load in film to all levels of students in Grades 8-12;

  • Creating and designing lesson plans around all aspects of film;

  • Maintaining a film lab including updating computer software, and managing the podcast studio, and film equipment;

  • Filming, editing, and maintaining archive of weekly upper school assemblies;

  • Filming and editing the yearly Fashion Show event;

  • Organizing the annual Film Festival;

  • Teaching and assisting with the podcast and film in city sem;

  • Assisting with year-end senior films;

  • Performing other projects, duties and tasks as assigned

Position requirements
The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in studio art with a concentration in film, or equivalent; Masters preferred;

  • Prior successful experience teaching Middle and High School students;

  • Experience as a practicing artist or practical studio experience is a benefit

  • The ability to apply a variety of pedagogical approaches and to be flexible is a must;

  • A strong ability to collaborate with teachers within the visual arts department and across a range of disciplines is also required;

  • An understanding of cultural competency; a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion work;

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills;

  • The ability to maintain the studio space and keep track of materials and equipment;

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;

  • A passion for progressive education and dedication to the mission of Ethical Culture Fieldston School;

  • A commitment and respect for diversity in all its forms;

  • The ability to listen effectively and be open to feedback.
